About Onyx
Having been in business for over 10 years, Onyx Salon has shown growth and resilience appropriately similar to that of its namesake, the ancient Greek word “Onux”, meaning “finger nail.” The salon officially opened its doors in 1995, just prior to the cultural and artistic explosion that accompanied the renovation of downtown Portland’s Pearl District. It would be only partially correct to say that the salon was in the right place at the right time — rather, Onyx Salon was one of a number of existing small businesses that helped establish the very sense of community and contemporary style that the Pearl District now enjoys.
Kevin Huynh, owner and founder of Onyx Salon, discovered his love of the beauty arts at 18 years old while working at Almaden Nails, a family-owned salon founded by his sister Timi in San Jose, California. After moving to Portland in 1994, Kevin was excited to put his many years of experience at Almaden to use and create a salon that would reflect his own artistic talents and identity. It is only appropriate that in a business born from the passion of his own family, Kevin now enjoys close familial relationships with his clients, many of whom have patronized the salon since its very beginning and continue to do so.
